Lincoln Electric is proud to announce that Andres Acuna, R&D Consumable Engineer at Lincoln Electric, recently became one of the co-recipients of the William Spraragen Memorial Award. Along with his teammates (Kaue C. Riffel, Regis Henrique Gonçalves E Silva, Antonio J. Ramirez, Giovani Dalpiaz, and Marcelo Torres Piza Paes), Andres is being recognized for his work on the paper, “Multiphysics Simulation of In-Service Welding and Induction Preheating,” printed in the February 2024 issue of the Welding Journal.

This study presents a comprehensive multiphysics finite element model (FEM) to simulate in-service welding of Type B sleeve repairs in pipelines, integrating heat transfer, fluid flow, and electromagnetic induction heating. The model addresses the limitations of previous simulations by incorporating realistic preheating and fluid dynamics, which are critical for accurate thermal cycle predictions and weld quality. This foundational work sets the stage for Part 2 “Multiphysics Simulation of In-Service Welding and Induction Preheating: Part 2”, which focuses on validating the model through microstructural analysis and mechanical behavior assessments.

This award is sponsored by AWS and honors William Spraragen, a founding member of the Society and the first Editor of the Welding Journal, serving from 1922 to 1954. It is presented for the best paper published in the Research Supplement section of the Welding Journal during the previous calendar year.

Award recipients will be celebrated at the AWS Awards Recognition Ceremony, as part of the FABTECH 2025 tradeshow in Chicago, IL this September.

Lincoln Electric remains committed to research and innovation and is very proud of the accomplishments of Andres and his team!
